Recently we had to say goodbye to Samson and while he was only 11lbs - the void it has left in our lives is immeasurable. Samson was such a special boy to us and even though we are left with countless memories, we wish we could have just one more day. And that's the thing. When you welcome a new pet into your life, you know the day will come that you have to let them go, but you're never ready. As cherished members of our lives, our pets leave behind imprints on our hearts, and countless memories that always live on. Finding ways to grieve in a healthy way can be both comforting and healing. From creating a memory box filled with keepsakes to planting a tree in their honour, there are many ways to remember our pets and celebrate the joy they brought into our lives.

Coping with Loss
Grieving the loss of a furry friend is a deeply personal journey. You will feel a range of emotions – sadness, anger, or even guilt. But it's okay to grieve. In fact it's healthy. Allow yourself to have these emotions. Some days will be harder than others, and that's perfectly normal, but be patient with yourself as you process your feelings.
Creating a routine can help provide structure during this challenging time. Maybe it's taking a daily walk, setting aside time each day to look at photos of your pet, or watching a video of them.
Don't hesitate to talk about your pet. Sharing memories with friends or family who understand can be incredibly healing.
Finding Support After Pet Loss

You may feel like you are alone, but there are many resources available to help you through your loss.
Online forums and support groups can connect you with others who understand what you're going through. Sharing experiences can be comforting and help you feel less isolated.
Don't forget about local resources. Many animal shelters and veterinary clinics offer pet bereavement services or can point you towards helpful resources in your community. You can also talk to a grief counselor who specializes in pet loss. They can provide strategies to cope with your emotions and offer a safe space to express your feelings.
Honouring Your Pets Memory
Remembering your pet can be a beautiful way to celebrate the joy they brought into your life. Additionally, keeping your pet's memory alive can be a comforting part of the grieving process. It's about celebrating the love and happiness they brought into your life. And there are many ways to do so:
Create a memory book or scrapbook filled with photos, stories, and mementos. This can be a therapeutic project and a treasured keepsake.
Consider setting up a small memorial in your home. This could be a framed photo, their favorite toy, or a special candle you light in their memory.
Share stories about your pet with friends and family. Talking about the funny moments, the quirks, and the love you shared can keep their spirit alive.
If you're feeling creative, write a letter to your pet expressing your feelings. This can be a powerful way to process your emotions and say the things you wish you could tell them.
Other Memorial Ideas

There are many other unique and personal ways to honour your pet's memory. The key is to choose something that feels meaningful to you and captures your pet's spirit.
Plant a tree or create a garden in your pet's honor. Watching it grow can be a beautiful reminder of your pet's lasting impact.
Commission a piece of art featuring your pet. This could be a painting, a sketch, or even a custom piece of jewelry. We had glass pendants made with some of Samson's ashes - it makes us feel close to him and allows him to always be with us.
Donate to an animal shelter or rescue organization in your pet's name. This can help other animals in need and create a positive legacy.
Moving Forward
While the pain of loss is real, it's important to remember that moving forward doesn't mean forgetting. Your pet may not be physically around anymore, but that doesn't mean you have to forget them.
Embracing Positive Memories
Focusing on the happy times can be a powerful way to heal. It's about cherishing the love and joy they brought into your life and shifting your focus from the pain of loss to gratitude for the time you had together. This doesn't happen overnight, but it's a healing perspective to work towards.
Share funny or heartwarming stories about your pet with others. Laughter and positive reminiscing can be incredibly therapeutic.
Consider ways to keep your pet's spirit alive in your daily life. Maybe it's using their favorite walking route, or continuing on a tradition you shared.
Remember, it's okay to smile and even laugh when thinking about your pet. Joy and grief can coexist, and happy memories are a gift your pet left you.

Finding Comfort in New Routines
Establishing new routines can help you move forward while still honoring your pet's memory. It's about creating a "new normal" that feels right for you. Start small. Maybe it's adjusting your morning routine, or finding a new way to spend the time you used to dedicate to your pet's care.
Consider volunteering at a local animal shelter. This can be a meaningful way to channel your love for animals and help those in need.
Explore new hobbies or revisit old ones. Engaging in activities you enjoy can help lift your spirits and provide a sense of purpose.
Ultimately, what gives you comfort is highly personal. Be patient with yourself, as some days will be easier than others - and that's okay. Moving forward is a process, not a destination. Truthfully, you never really get over a loss - you just learn how to move forward, but the scar will always remain. And i'm okay with that because every scar you bear is a reminder of the love you shared. That is something that can never be taken away.
